Turnip Cake

One of the most common dishes that is consumed during the Chinese New Year is the quintessential radish cake! The west took a quite a liking to this Chinese delicacy, so much so, they created their own version of the ‘cake’. Fresh, shredded turnips, carrots, shitake mushrooms, white radishes and other veggies are boiled and then steamed in rectangular trays. The ‘cake’ is then deep fried and tossed with hot garlic sauce and crunchy spring onions and served with a tasty garlic dip.


White Radish - 400gms
Turnip (julienne) - 200gms
Carrot (julienne) - 100gms
Shitake Mushroom  - chopped - 50gms
Rice flour - 400gms
Corn flour - 80gms
Sesame oil  - 30gms
Sugar - 20gms
Oyster mushroom sauce - 40gms
white pepper powder - 4gms
Refined oil

Garlic (chopped and golden fried) - 150gms
Onion (Finely chopped & golden fried) - 150gms
Fresh red chilli - 20gms
Spring onion (chopped) - 40gms
Hot Garlic Sauce
Garlic (chopped) - 20gms
Chilli paste - 60gms
tomato ketchup - 40gms
Light soya - 5ml

Boil all the shredded veggies and stain it for 5min. Take a bowl and mix all the ingredients and seasoning, add veggies, mix it properly. Steam and fry it. Put it on a rectangle/square tray, then wrap with aluminium foil, steam it for 25 minutes.

Keep it outside for 1 hour. Cut into 1.5 inches square shape of cakes (30gms of each piece). Take 6 pieces of cake, dip it in corn flour and deep-fry it. 
Heat a wok, add a spoon of hot garlic sauce and fried cake, then add 30gms of  fried garlic, fried onion, chilli chopped, powder and salt
Do not use oil while tossing the cakes. Garnish with chopped spring onion. Serve with hot garlic dip on the side.
