A keto diet is a well-known low carb diet. The diet aims at getting the body to produce ketones in the liver to be used as energy. It’s referred to by many different names – the ketogenic diet, the low carb diet and the low carb high fat diet, etc.
How does it work?
Well, when you eat something high in carbs, your body produces glucose and insulin.
Glucose is the easiest for your body to convert into energy and insulin is produced to get this glucose into the bloodstream and take it around your body to energise you.
Since the glucose being fed to your body is so high and abundant, your fats are not needed and are therefore stored.
When you follow a higher carbohydrate diet, the body will use glucose as the main form of energy.
By lowering the intake of carbs, the body is induced into a state known as ketosis and is forced to burn up fats for energy rather than store it.
That’s it. That’s quite simply what a keto diet does for you.
